Effective Supervision Requires Establishing Different...

Effective supervision requires establishing different levels of supervision in order to know which offenders need closer supervision from those who require less supervision (Alarid Del Carmen, 2012). Generally, the supervision of offenders is categorized into three or four levels: maximum, medium and minimum or maximum, high, standard, and administrative (Alarid Del Carmen, 2012). The administrative level is for probationers or parolees who have committed minor offenses, satisfied financial responsibilities, and been in compliance for two years (Alarid Del Carmen, 2012). Probationers and parolees on the administrative level do not require a personal visit or personal contact with the officer (Alarid Del Carmen, 2012). Individuals on the administrative level are required to call in and leave a voicemail or mail in a residence verification and employment document (Alarid Del Carmen, 2012). A caseload is the number of individuals that one probation or parole officer is responsible for and can supervise effectively (Alarid Del Carmen, 2012). The number of people that one officer can supervise varies from state to state (Alarid Del Carmen, 2012). The more intensive the supervision is the lower the officer’s caseload (Alarid Del Carmen, 2012). In Nathaniel Hawthorn’s Young Goodman Brown and Washington Irving’s Rip Van Winkle share a common ground of witchcraft and a man vs man inner conflict of the unknown. We witness our two protagonist Goodman Brown and Rip endure life or death situations and what they conquer throughout their self-entitlement. Firstly, we see the journey of young, newly wedded Goodman Brown, and his wife Faith. A Puritan believed couple, who’s in the mindset of being set for life all because of Faith being an Elite, thus leading to Goodman Brown going into the woods and fighting evil to be recognized as one of the Elites as well (1). He is convinced to leave Faith alone for the night as his attempt was to be with her even after death do them apart, yet she†¦show more content†¦He quickly scurried back to the streets of Salem (9), there he sees the townspeople in their natural environment. Praying, practicing their faith, even dictating catechism to the younglings, but Goodman Brown was convinced that what he saw was not a dream. When he emerges home his wife greets him with joy after his late-night adventure, yet after what he saw, he simply walked away and gave her the cold shoulder. In theory, Goodman Brown is affected and convinced that the late-night ritual did happen and pushes everyone around him away and dies a lonely, bitter old man. In comparison to Rip Van Winkle, who is a very well-liked man in his community (3), but faces the usual marriage conflict of his wife constantly nagging and him looking for a way to escape (4). He travels first with his dog Wolf to the inn, where he goes to listen to Nicholas Vedder and his group discus the political distress they feel (4). Not soon after his wife would call and explicitly demand her husband go back home immediately. Instead Rip unconsciously dragged himself to the highest point of the Kaatskill mountains, where he perused his favorite sport of squirrel shooting (5). After a long nap, he sees a short, square built old fellow, who asked for his help in lifting the heavy keg towards the top of the mountain on a long and rocky road until they see a hollow, amphitheater. Self Harm Is No Big Deal - 1882 Words

Many people think that self-harm is no big deal. â€Å"It’s just for attention,† they say â€Å"they’re not really hurting themselves†¦ right?† Wrong. Self-harm is a HUGE deal. In fact, it is 40-100 times more common than suicide. Suicide has been around for ages, while self-harm is a new trend that has been growing since the mid 1990’s, and the numbers are still skyrocketing. Self-harm was three times more common in 2011 than in 2007. Now, tell me that you think that that isn’t a big deal. Statistics show that 1% of the United States self-harms. So imagine you are in a room with 200 other people. It is likely that two of these people hurt themselves. Sometimes it is daily, other times it may just be occasional. Two people may not seem like a lot, but in reality it is. Our society has made it seem like it’s a normal thing. Pictures are plastered all over the internet for anyone to see. Some people may even post videos. The three most common places for teens or adults to see these are on blogs, YouTube, and especially Tumblr. But the biggest influence is celebrities. Recently, many famous idols have been coming out and admitting that they self-harm. Some examples are Megan Fox, Johnny Depp, Angelina Jolie, Lindsay Lohan, Miley Cyrus, and Demi Lovato. It is known that because of precedence,princesses must be adored and this is simply because of their outstanding appearance. By examining the fairy tales of Sleeping Beauty in the Wood, Perraults version of Cinderella, and Pretty Goldilocks, it will be evident that the stories revolve around one-dimensional, narcissistic individuals, otherwise known as Princesses.In Sleeping Beauty in the Wood the princess is first introduced as a child whohad all the p erfections imaginable. (Perrault, Sleeping 66) As well, after fairies had been summoned to serve her, each one gave her a gift: to be the most beautiful person in the world, have the wit of an angel, as well as wonderful grace in everything that she did. The author creates the portrait of a shallow character which has been blessed with cursory traits. It is important to note that the princess was not born with such characterisitcs, butthe fairies, looking out for her best interest and serving her, use their supernatural powers so that she might possess these apparently essential qualities. The complete story depends on and focuses around Sleeping Beautys appearance. Although she has had misfortune and been pricked by a spindle and doomed to sleep for one hundred years, it is said that her swooning had not dimmed her complexion: her cheeks were carnation and her lips were coral. (Perrault, Sleeping 68) Again, the story is carried on the fact that the princess must live up to the expe ctations of being beautiful. The author feels it is important to let the reader know the status of her looks to ensure that she is till looking her best despite being under a spell. As the story progresses, the princess is subjected to mistreatment by the wicked Queen-Mother, yet in the end the beautiful looking princess prevails while theugly Queen-Mother is defeated. It is suggested that the unfortunate lookingQueen-Mother gets what she deserves by committing suicide and throwing herself into the cauldron of vipers and serpents. It is assumed that Sleeping Beautys demeanor helped her to survive only to receive her King. The princess husband is only upset for a moment before being comforted by: his beautiful wife and children who soon made him happy again. (Perrault, Sleeping 77) Again, beauty can overcome everything whether it is misfortune or grief. Another example of the role of princesses and the benefits reaped byattractiveness is in Cinderella or the Little Glass Slipper. At the beginning of the story it is stated that although Cinderella is mistreated by her step-mother and often called Cinderwench because of her dirty apparel, she was a hundred times handsomer than her sisters. (Perrault, Cinderella 79) It is important to note that Cinderella believed that she would not be able to attend the ball because of her lack of appropriate clothes, but again afairy godmother is able to use supernatural powers to ensure that she receive the things she needed to be presentable, to be beautiful. Cinderella arrives at the ball in her formal garments, she is received by a profound silence and a confused noise of Ha! How handsome she is! (Perrault, Cinderella 83) This shows that if she can flaunt her beauty it is surely appreciated by all.
